St. Patty's Day

With temperatures reaching up into the 40’s, this St. Patrick’s Day weekend is the perfect time to do a Pub Crawl in Anchorage. Luckily the Anchorage Downtown Partnership has one set and ready to go for you, but sometimes we locals like to buck tradition and make our own path while consuming adult beverages on an adventure. Here are a few options for you to find the best fun for you this Saturday night.

ADP has paired with iHeart Media, and Proper Twelve Irish Whiskey to once again bring you the St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl. Eight bars will participate in this year’s event, and each one is offering a non-alcoholic drink special for the evening in order to make sure that even the teetotalers can get into the holiday spirit. To truly soak up some of the culture of Ireland, start your evening early at either McGinley’s Irish Pub or 49th State Brewing Company; both locations will have performances by Irish Dancers starting as early as 6pm. Grab some dinner while you are there to make sure that you last for the rest of the fun.

Fletcher’s and Whale’s Tail in the Captain Cook are both stops on the pub crawl map, and at each you can try their non-alcoholic offering, the Buzz Free Musher. Whale’s Tail will also have DJ 3rd George and a dance floor until 2am. Gaslight and the Pioneer Bar are next door to each other, and whether you choose to dance with DJ Cross at the Pio or try your Irish luck with Oscar the mechanical bull at the Gaslight, both locations will get you in the mood to party.

I Like Robots is taking the stage at Williwaw Social. Make sure that whatever green outfit you decide to wear can also be interpreted as 80’s attire and you will fit right in with this local favorite cover band. Of course, the costumes are not required but when you have an excuse to dress up, why not take it? The Avenue Bar on the corner of 4th and D really is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and always has plenty of space to dance. They will also be featuring an Alaskan gold coin beer pong challenge. Make sure to ask about their Buzz Free Irish Coffee drink special.

If you want the authentic St. Patrick’s Day experience you should probably just plan to spend some time at Reilly’s Irish Pub near the corner of Fireweed and C street. With over 20 Irish Whiskey’s in stock, and Irish beer offerings that go far beyond Guinness, Reilly’s is the choice for a Black & Tan, Harp, Smithwick’s, or Irish Death. Jeannie and the crew will be making sure that you are feeling the love and hospitality that this neighborhood pub is known for. From 9pm to 1am, Orion Donicht will be providing the music, and all weekend long there will be performances from Bagpipe players.

The next stop as you explore the West side of Anchorage is none other than the world famous Koots! Weekend entertainment will feature tunes from all your favorite local DJ’s, including Joe Brady, and the bands Black Water Railroad Company and The Holler will be taking stage while the staff quenches your thirst with traditional green beer.

If you are looking to rock a little harder, continue your trek down the miracle mile to the Carousel Lounge. Decepticide, DevilWitch, and Syco-Mule will all be playing in celebration of the legendary Enzo, who is going to be having his birthday party that same Saturday night. No cover charge for this party that starts at 9:30pm.

Just past the Carousel, but a great option for dinner and music, La Potato is having a celebration featuring the music of Superfrequency! If you enjoy funk, dance, and rock, with a touch of electronica this is the band for you. Dinner specials are sure to be a feature considering the care the crew at La Potato put into everything that they do.

Activities on the East side of A street always seem to be a little more unusual than in other parts of the city, but that makes them more fun! Also, the ample amounts of parking mean that your vehicle has a better chance of staying safe when you make the responsible decision to call for a ride home after too many Irish Car Bombs.

Stop by Mad Myrna’s for their St. Patrick’s Day party and hit the floor that is consistently voted the best place to dance in Anchorage by Press readers. You can also get a little taste of your own fame in the ballroom that hosts karaoke 7 nights a week. Chris, Misha, and Ashley always know how to make a great cocktail, and there is ample seating for these crowded drinking holidays.

If you are feeling truly adventurous, head over to the other gay bar in town, just a block and a half away at The Raven, for the St. Patrick’s Underwear Party. Pants are prisons for your legs, and we see no reason why you should have to wear them anyway. Pant’s check is available, so wear your cutest underwear and stop in to see Scottie, Roger and the boys while you enjoy this warm night indoors or out on their expansive deck.

Heading even further East, Van’s Dive Bar will be hosting the Shamrock Showcase! Live from the North will be performing along side some of Alaska’s Best Artists. Sponsored by Obsession Records, the lineup includes, D the Lyricists, Mevlano, Zee, Benn Swann, Jacob Jump, Madd Angler, Double Dose, Stevie the Blessed, Kevin the Brain Ir1, Reflector, Non-Profit Times, and Young Caasi.

Out on Muldoon the Last Frontier Bar will be having a St. Patrick’s Day party with door prizes and live music from Jerry’s Situation. This 21+ event will be presented by Alaska Vets MC. Across the road stop in and check to see if the Press Picks Best Bartender is working at the Cabin Tavern. For those who know the magic of this neighborhood location, why would you go anywhere else?
