We have just a few more days until we usher in an entirely new era of the ‘Roaring Twenties.’ One hundred years ago the decade was filled it debauchery, mobsters, women empowerment, and a LOT of drinking, even though the manufacturing and sales of alcohol was completely prohibited. In a time that was punctuated by great jazz music, flapper dresses, and coast to coast embracing of fashion and slang, the finances more than doubled for citizens of the United States. We can only hope that this brand new chance at a decade of fun will bring more of the same.

Ringing in the New Year at midnight between December 31st and January 1st is traditionally a time to live your life to excess. Champagne, fireworks, great meals, and flawless outfits are common practice and here at the Press we wanted to give you some insight into the events that we are looking forward to attending. From food, cocktails, dancing, and more, here is where you can find the crew from your local alternative newspaper on the last holiday of 2019.

Downtown is always a happening spot on New Year’s Eve and this year the annual family friendly celebration that has been happening in Town Square is going to be moved to the area that normally has the Saturday and Sunday Markets during the summer. Join Anchorage Downtown Partnership, Ltd. for the annual New Year’s Eve Celebration on Tuesday, December 31st, 5 to 8 p.m. This year’s celebration will take place in the Sockeye Lot, on 3rd Avenue between C and E Streets. This free community event will feature a beer garden, the awesome local band THOSE GUYS AK, dancing, performances from Underground Dance Company, food vendors and exhibitions, a neon light-up sledding hill, and of course FIREWORKS!

After that party is over a new one will be starting for the over 21 crowd just a block away at the Avenue Bar. Alaskan Boys Entertainment in collaboration with the Avenue and Top Side Entertainment are proud to present Electric Avenue, a New Year’s Party. With a lineup of several of Anchorage’s favorite DJ’s as well as a light show, giveaways including an electric guitar and light toys, a champagne toast, and special on several drinks, this is going to be the most relaxed and fun NYE party happening downtown. There is no dress code, and no cover. The Avenue is the number one destination for bartenders and servers downtown, so why would you go anywhere but where the experts hang out?

If you want to stay on 4th Avenue but are looking for something more opulent with a great view of the city, head on over to the Crows Nest in the Captain Cook Hotel. Chef De Cuisine Reuben Gerber will be preparing an amazing pre fixe menu with seating times at 5:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Enjoy optional wine pairing! $125.00 per person, with $35.00 optional wine pairing. Call 907-343-2217 for reservations! Menu choices will include:

British Columbia Sturgeon Caviar, Oysters on the half shell, Kodiak Scallop Crudo, Wild Mushroom Bisque, North American bison short rib, Lemon Ash Pavlova, Raspberry Sorbet, Clementine Curd and Shaved Chocolate.

Another dinner option can be had right around the corner from the Avenue Bar at Sullivan’s Steakhouse from 3pm-1am. Join them New Year’s Eve for a 4-course feast for $85 per guest. Select a starter, soup or salad, entree, side dish and dessert. They will have live music in the bar to help us ring in the new year in style, and a champagne toast at midnight. Van’s Dive Bar, true to its name, will be doing a casual evening, but every evening that you end up at Van’s is a great time. Mark Spalford, the blues musician will be the lead of the Unknown Blues Band and there will be other bands playing as well. If you aren’t feeling like some DJ dancing but live music is up your alley swing by and say ‘hi’ to these talented artists.

Another option if you head to the Fairview side of downtown is to hit up the staff at the Raven. They will be having a fabulous Masquerade party featuring the talents of GHOZT KAT! She will be taking requests and spinning house music all night long. The crew will be doing giveaways all night long, and if you are at the Raven you need to make sure you get a picture with Winston the Penguin! He has a habit of dressing his best for every occasion so be sure to catch him on his good side. (It’s his left)

There is one corner in downtown that has three locations so you are sure to find something that satisfies your desires for the evening. Humpy’s will be having three parties for one cover between Flattop and Sub Zero! — Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse featuring live music and good vibes from H3, Flattop Pizza + Pool featuring DJ Adam kicking in the New Year, SubZero gives you an intimate setting with The Rick Zellinski Trio. No worries about bringing different outfits for each party. This crew just wants you to find the party that you will enjoy the most.

If you are looking to avoid downtown altogether but still want a choice that gives you more than one option, considering heading to the heart of Spenard and drinking different at Koots! They will be going into the New Year in true fashion and celebrating the 100th year anniversary of prohibition, and bootlegging up a bunch of booze for you! We know you have a flapper dress gathering dust in your closet. Pull that thing out and put it on! Featuring live music from The Stack, DJ Systematic, DJ LT & HNDRXX.

We at the Press would like to keep all of our lovely readers around for another year so make sure that you take some sort of safe transportation to and from your festivities. Crowson Law Group has partnered with Checker Cab to provide free safe rides home this holiday season. Simply call 644-4444 and all you need to do is mention Crowson Safe Ride to get a free ride home. It’s a much better option than trying to decide if you have had too many. Even better, get a hotel room downtown and get festive to your hearts delight.

Downtown the next morning will be an absolute smorgasbord of brunch and mimosa opportunities so return to the scene of your crimes and down some hair of the dog before you get a Crowson SAFE ride home.
