The Mat-Su Miners celebrate their 2017 Alaska Baseball League title.

By Matt Hickman

For the last three years the Alaska Baseball League has been the Mat-Su Miners and then everyone else.

Last year, it was the Anchorage Bucs that came closest to taking down the three-time champs, but a 7-1 defeat in the clinching game of the best-of-three finals last August sent the Miners to the Top of the World Series.

“When I was a player here in 2015 we (the Bucs) beat them in the finals, but in the last couple of years, as a coach, we’ve lost to them in the championship,” said Bucs head coach Grant Palmer, who played his collegiate ball at UC-Irvine. “They beat us by a game in the regular season last year and in the finals they got us the last couple years. I think talent-wise, both teams are very comparable, they just got the best of us in that series.”

Heading into the 2019 season, which began Wednesday night, the Bucs and Miners have to be favorites to meet again in the finals, but as Palmer points out, you never know the hand you’ve been dealt until the players start working together in the dugout and on the field.

“Looking at the rosters, I think every team has got some guys so it’s going to be a competitive year this summer and we’re looking forward to getting it going,” Palmer said. “On paper, teams can look one way or another, but until they’re playing and meshing you just don’t know.”

First-year Mat-Su head coach Tyler LeBrun knows full well the rest of the league is gunning for his squad.

“The expectation is to win another (championship),” LeBrun said. “Make it four in a row. No team has ever won four in a row.”

The Miners came out of the gates sluggishly last season, but came on strong late to take the No. 1 seed.

“It was huge for us to go through that in our first year,” LeBrun said.

LeBrun said he remembers wondering if it was time to hit the panic button. But the Miners played their way through the struggles and continued to get better.

LeBrun said the Miners will also benefit from the return of Texas A&M sophomore Aaron Walters, who won a ring with Mat-Su last season.

“It’s nice to have at least one guy back,” LeBrun said. “He’s experienced. He knows how we run the program. He knows what it’s like to win.”

The first roster name that came to mind for Palmer is Chad Castillo, who hit .335 for Cal Baptist University this season as a freshman with 27 RBIs.

“We worked out (Monday) for the first time. It’s still too early to tell. Some of our guys had some good numbers, good seasons — Castillo at Cal Baptist had a good freshman year and some of the arms we’ve got are promising that threw some good innings, but it’s early. We haven’t seen them play and still haven’t figured out that opening day roster that’s going to give us the best chance each night,” Palmer said.

Most collegiate players in the ABL play with metal or composite bats, and Palmer said, that takes some adjustment in the wooden bat summer league.

“That could be an adjustment they have to make early on, but in my experience they’ve adjusted fairly well. In the games they’re getting their timing back again, get the feel for wood bats, but once they get their feet wet, they make that adjustment,” Palmer said. “I think for a lot of them (wood bats) are (an allure) just because pro baseball uses wood and it gets that professional vibe going on what it’s like in the minor leagues. I think that excites them, and that we play every day. In college you play 3 to 4 times a week, and here we play almost every day. It can be a grind, but I think the guys enjoy playing a ton of games.”

The Bucs kick their season off Thursday night, June 6 against the Peninsula Oilers starting at 7 at Mulcahy Stadium, which they share with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots who open at the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks, and play their home opener Saturday night against the Oilers.

Jeremiah Bartz of the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman contributed to this report.
