Identity, Inc., Alaska’s leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy and education organization, will host its first-ever winter fundraiser tonight at Williwaw Social.
This sold out event will be attended by more than 120 business and LGBTQ leaders and will features live and silent auction components.
Year-round, Identity is home to more than 12 LGBTQ support groups, ranging from programs for local youth, parents, and the city’s growing trans community, to elder and partnering organizations.
In addition to Anchorage PrideFest each June, Identity raises money through community donations, grants, and small events around the state. Organizers say it’s time to think bigger.
“We realized as an organization that we really needed to diversify our fundraising efforts,” said JJ Harrier, board member with Identity and Winter Fundraising chair. “It takes money to keep the lights on year-round and support our one staff member, so this felt like the best solution.”
Items have been donated from all over the state, including a grand prize of a round-trip ticket on Alaska Airlines to Costa Rica.
Tables were purchased by Wells Fargo, Law Office of Josh Fink, Full Spectrum Health, Sato & Sato, Orchestrated Consulting, and more. Darl Schaaf of Art Services North will be the evening’s host and auctioneer.
Capping off the evening is a live one-hour performance by Ginger Minj, who competed on RuPaul Drag Race and stars in Netflix’s popular movie, Dumplin.
“It’s so important to support organizations like Identity because they are our safe spaces, “said Joshua Eads, aka Ginger Minj. “They provide invaluable resources to the community while giving us a place to let our guard down and be ourselves.”
Identity’s Winter Fundraiser will kick off at 7 pm tonight, Friday, January 25, at Williwaw Social.
