Spenard Jazz Fest, Anchorage’s beloved, home-grown music festival, kicks off its 12th season this weekend. The two-week festival, which runs May 18-June 3, brings some of the state’s most talented musicians to Anchorage for the chance to collaborate and share an eclectic mix of music loosely or tightly fitting the jazz idiom – with the community.

This year’s festival marks an important milestone for the Alaska music community, the release of the first-ever Alaska Real Book, a compilation of original compositions by exclusively Alaskan artists. The collection is based on the iconic jazz manual, The Real Book, which is a staple in any jazz musicians’ repertoire. The Alaska Real Book celebrates the more than 140 musicians who have performed at Spenard Jazz Fest over the past 12 years. The first edition will be launched at the Jazz Fest Opening Party on May 31 at The Writer’s Block Bookstore & Café.

“The Alaska Real Book is the realization of a decade-old dream and a landmark effort to put as many Alaska music makers on the map as possible,” said Spenard Jazz Fest Director Yngvil Vatn Guttu. “We’re thrilled to share this book with Alaska’s music community and even see some of the musicians who contributed perform at this year’s festival.”

Musicians performing at the 12th annual Spenard Jazz Fest include Alaska Jazz Workshop Fun Band, Karrie Pavish Anderson (Galena), Baker’s Secret (Anchorage), Marian Call (Juneau), Dale Curtis (Ketchikan), Elite 9 (Seward), Alyssa Fischer (Juneau), Rama Ishaya (Anchorage), John Damberg Latin Jazz Quartet (Anchorage), Konnexions (Anchorage), Tom Locher (Juneau), Elena Lukina EL, Dan Mac, Mark Manners, Quadshot and Sara Anderholm Trio (Anchorage), Joel Schnaper Band (Los Angeles), Arthur Walsh (Oberlin), Karen Strid (Homer), John Pypes Teamer, Julie Webb, YNGVIL and Rick Zelinsky (Anchorage).

Festival events also includes music jams at Spenard Farmers Market, free workshops, additional concerts on Sunday June 2, and two films at Bear Tooth featuring pre-show live music on Monday, June 3. The full schedule can be found below or at spenardjazzfest.org.

2019 Spenard Jazz Fest sponsors include 49th State Brewing Company, Alaska Public Media, the Atwood Foundation, Rasmuson Foundation, Bosco’s Comics, Bear Tooth Theatrepub, Spenard Roadhouse Spenard Farmer’s Market, Cook Inlet Housing Authority, The Music Man and Hulin Alaskan Design.

The multi-disciplinary arts festival celebrates all musical genres and seeks to strengthen Alaska’s musician community. For more information and a schedule of events, visit spenardjazzfest.org.
