At 10:36 PM on Monday, July 1, 2019, a citizen called APD Dispatch to report that a male had been shot. Another citizen called to say they heard shots fired and saw people running. Officers responded to the trailer park on the 9500-block of Brayton Drive and made contact with the adult male victim at his home; he had been shot at least once in the lower body. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.
Initial indications are that 27-year-old Mykel R. Straight showed up at the victim’s home. Both the victim and Straight were standing outside the house when they got into a verbal altercation. Straight produced a handgun and fired more than once before running from the scene on foot. It appears the victim and Straight knew one another prior to the shooting
Officers arrived in the area and set up a perimeter. Information was received that Straight was at the Chevron on O’Malley Center Court. Officers responded and took Straight into custody at 11:37 PM; he was transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning. Afterwards Straight was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on the charges of Assault I, Assault II, Misconduct Involving a Weapon III – Felon in Possession, and Reckless Endangerment.
The nature of the argument and motive for the shooting are still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident, to include surveillance footage, is asked to contact Police Dispatch at 3-1-1 (option #1).
