On 7/5/19 at around 8:06 a.m., Mid-Shift Patrol officers noticed black smoke and some flames in a wooded area near the intersection of Elmore Road and E Tudor Road. Our partners at the Anchorage Fire Department were notified as well as the WIldfire Crew that was already in the general area for the MLK Jr. Fire from this past week. The area of the fire was located and firefighters were able to contain and put out the fire. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
Officers with the Patrol Division made contact with the adult male suspect who started the fire. He has been identified as 50-year-old Kevin Slats. He was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on multiple charges including Criminal Negligent Burning, Failure to Report a Wildfire, and Reckless Endangerment. While in a nearby area, this fire is not related to the MLK Jr. fire.
This serves as an important reminder that our everyone must abide the burn bans thorughout the municipality of Anchorage. Do not put yourself, your neighbors, and fellow community members in danger. The current conditions are extreme and pose a major fire risk.
NOTE: Outdoor fires are prohibited during the burn ban. This includes bon fires, campfires, open flame cooking fires (except barbecues), portable outdoor fireplaces, fixed/built in outdoor fire places, grass or yard debris burning, and any other heat source which have the potential to start a grass or wildland fire.
