At 4:47 AM on April 15, 2020, APD Dispatch received a call regarding reports of a robbery which had occurred near McDonalds at Tudor and Folker. Initial indications are that the adult male victim was standing in the parking lot of McDonalds when he was approached by two adult males in a silver Dodge van whom he did not know. The driver was later identified as 21-year-old John W. Tauanu’u and the passenger was later identified as 21-year-old Makiu J. Tovio. John and Makiu gave the victim food and spoke to him for a moment before both suspects stepped out of the van. Makiu struck the victim multiple times which left visible injuries; the victim fell to the ground. Makiu then stole items from the victim’s person. Afterwards the victim was able to escape and run to a nearby apartment complex where he hid in a stairwell.

The victim flagged down another citizen who called police. Prior to officer arrival, both suspects got back in the van and drove into the apartment complex parking lot where the victim had gone. The victim saw Makiu with his arm hanging out of the window while holding a handgun. When the two suspects couldn’t see the victim, they drove away.

Some of the responding officers made contact with the victim. Others fanned out to look for the suspects; they located the van and conducted a traffic stop at Parker and 42nd. Both Makiu and John were taken into custody without incident and transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives. Afterwards both suspects were remanded at the jail on the charges of Robbery II, Assault III, Assault IV, and Theft III. John Tauanu’u was also charged with Violate Conditions of Release.

The victim was taken to the hospital for evaluation of his non-life-threatening injuries. The van was towed for evidence.
