On August 12, 2019 Superior Court Judge Kevin M. Saxby sentenced 77-year-old Ernesto Carinio to serve 31 years on multiple counts of sexual abuse of a minor.
An Anchorage jury convicted Carinio in October 2018 of three counts of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in the First Degree and two counts of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in the Second Degree. The jury heard evidence that in the years 2000, 2002, and 2008 Carinio repeatedly sexually abused two of his granddaughters in Anchorage. The victims testified that the sexual abuse occurred hundreds of times. At the time of the abuse both victims were under 13 years of age. The victims, now adults, came forward in early 2016 and, after indictment, Carinio was extradited to Alaska from Washington State.
For this conduct, Carinio faced a sentencing range of 25 to 35 years with a maximum sentence of 99 years. Carinio must serve a minimum term of 25 years before he may be released on parole. Because of the seriousness and nature of his offenses, 77-year-old Carinio will not be eligible for early release for advanced age or health reasons.
