At 7:55 PM on July 13, 2019, a citizen called APD Dispatch to report that someone had rolled their vehicle on the ramp at O’Malley and the New Seward Highway. As police were responding, Dispatch was further advised the driver was running from the crash on foot. Several officers began searching the area when one of them was flagged down by a citizen who was standing next to another male. The citizen stated the male next to him was the driver who ran from the rolled vehicle and subsequently hid in the bushes at Brayton Drive and Thuja Avenue.
The officer contacted the suspect driver who was identified as 21-year-old Blake R. McBirney. A computer check showed that McBirney had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. As the officer was pat searching McBirney, the officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol. After conducting Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs), McBirney was arrested for Operating under the Influence. Another officer arrived on-scene and stated she made contact with three other people who all stated they saw McBirney driving the vehicle prior to the collision and would be willing to identify McBirney in a show-up.
McBirney was transported to the jail for further processing. Once there he refused to provide a breath sample. McBirney was remanded on his existing warrant. He was additionally charged with Operating under the Influence, Leaving the Scene of a Crash, Criminal Mischief, and Refusal. He was cited for Driving While License Suspended.
APD is grateful for all of the witnesses who came forward and helped with the identification of the suspect.
