Additional information in the preliminary investigation found an officer with the Patrol Division was in the area of 2nd and Lane Street on routine patrol, when he observed what appeared to be an adult male pointing a gun at nearby houses and people in the park. Multiple officers began to respond to the area. Once they arrived on scene and located the suspect in the park, they gave commands for the suspect to stop and drop the weapon. The suspect ignored the officers multiple commands, began to manipulate the weapon and then pointed it at officers. Three officers responded by firing at the suspect. When the suspect no longer posed a threat to the officers or the public, officers immediately administered first aid while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
The suspect’s weapon has been identified as a Crossman replica 1911 BB gun. See attached stock photo.
The suspect’s identity is not being released at this time pending the investigation.
No officers were injured.
The three officers involved have been placed on mandatory administrative leave. Their names will be released in 72 hours per protocol.
The case will be given to the Office of Special Prosecution for review. An Internal Affairs investigation will be conducted as well. Crime scene investigators and detectives are assisting with this investigation.
On 8/5/19 around 10:30 a.m., Officers with the Patrol Division responded to the area of Dave Rose Park (201 Lane Street) in reference to a report of a suspicious person with a weapon.
The preliminary investigation found that as officers arrived in the area, they located one male suspect randomly pointing a gun at people. The suspect ignored officer’s commands to stop and put the weapon down. He continued to ignore commands and pointed the gun at officers. At that time, officers fired their weapons. The suspect was shot and transported to a local hospital in unknown condition. No officer were injured.
