Out North continues to thrive in its new space. The organization’s rich community ties and growing number of partnerships makes it a catalyst for a transformative arts scene in Anchorage that is vibrant, diverse, and cooler than ever. The programming for the remainder of 2018 fulfils Out North’s mission to advance contemporary art in Anchorage by presenting experimental work, supporting under-represented voices and encouraging cultural dialogue.

September 28, 2018: Welcome Celebration with Grammy Winner, Flor de Toloache

Out North in partnership with the Anchorage Concert Association will host a community celebration welcoming Grammy Award winner, all-female mariachi group, Flor de Toloache. The gallery space will be transformed, giving a stage to the group for an intimate engagement. 7-9 PM

September 29, 2018: Identity YAS! Youth Art Show Case

Y.A.S! (Youth Arts Showcase) is an LGBTQ+ Youth Variety show. The purpose of the show is to highlight youth expression, talent, and creativity in a more professional atmosphere. Singers, dancers, poets, drag performers, etc. will come together in celebration of diversity and identity in the performance arts.

October 5, 2018, First Friday: AlaskaWax, Group Exhibit

AlaskaWax is comprised of members of the International Encaustic Artists. The Alaska chapter will present “It's Not Just Black & White”, a themes show featuring encaustic or cold wax works featuring black and white with one additional color. With almost a dozen artists participating, the exhibit will present a wide interpretation on the theme.

October 5 and 6, 2018: PoGo GoGo Co. & Mostly Melanin Arts Team Up

First Friday is the place to be for all-original sketch comedy. PoGo GoGo is a collaborative sketch comedy troupe with history and a following. This time, they are partnering with Mostly Melanin Arts (MMA), an Anchorage-based improv troupe whose motto is “Making you tap out with laughter.”

October 12 and 15, 2018: Serial Bowl

Anchorage`s Episodic Theatre Extravaganza returns to Out North at the Experience Theater! Five one act plays compete to return to further performances. Each script`s fate is in the hands of the Audience. Only they can select which teams advance to further episodes! https://www.serialbowlak.com/

October 20, 2018: Kinbaku Performance

Alaska Kinbaku Enthusiasts (AKE) is a group of dedicated Japanese style Kinbaku ‘rope artists’ residing throughout Alaska. For the last four years these dedicated artisans have trained, educated, performed and provided community service throughout Alaska promoting the art of Kinbaku and working to de-marginalize the sensual art of rope bondage. https://www.facebook.com/alaska.kinbaku

October 26, 2018: Mostly Melanin Arts

Anchorage-based improv troupe whose motto is “Making you tap out with laughter.” Come join the fun of inprov— unpredictably fun!

November 1 and 2, 2018: The 14th Annual Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration

Dia de Muertos, Day of the Dead, has grown deep roots in Anchorage. Out North has traditionally created a space for the LatinX community to foster and celebrate one of its most important cultural holidays. This year, the celebration will be bigger than ever, as the LatinX community continues to grow and embrace Dia de Muertos, and it invites others to come learn the history and meaning of its philosophy on death and the afterlife. Dia de Muertos brings together complex human experiences that are somber and joyful, serious and fun, philosophical and methodical, the sacred and the secular. Come enjoy the sounds, smells, and tastes of the celebration. There will also be workshops for children earlier in the month in preparation for Dia de Muertos.

November 9 through 1, 2018: Enzina Marrari presents “Of Relation”

Enzina Marrari’s performance, “Of Relation” explores the tension in relationships that keep people connected, sometimes close and at other times distant. It presents three vignettes that look the relationship to the self, familial relationships, and romantic relationships. “Of Relation” is simultaneously intimate and universal.

Mark Muro is known for riveting performances that engage viewers and makes them question the status quo. Muro’s writing is witty and his delivery won’t disappoint. Come get your feathers ruffled, just a bit.

November 14, 2018: Space to Lead

From Kiana to Cordova, Atmautluak to Juneau, youth in Alaska are standing up and speaking out for their beliefs. Space to Lead tells the story of incredible happenings when youth are empowered to take charge. Recover Alaska and Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (ANDVSA) present a multimedia exhibition highlighting youth-led solutions to our state’s leading public health crises—violence and alcohol misuse.

November 30 through December 9: Anchorage International Film Festival

Out North once again will help host The Anchorage International Film Festival (AIFF). AIFF is a 501(c)3 organization founded in 2001 and committed to independent filmmaking. Hundreds of volunteers, filmmakers, artists, sponsors, partners, and supporters make it possible to put on a two-week event every winter.
